Join the DC Preservation League for a bus tour of famed developer Harry Wardman’s apartment buildings. We will enter at least two of Wardman’s apartments, likely The Dresden and Rutland Courts, and view many others, including Wardman Tower and 1811 Kalorama Road NW. The tour meets in front of Wardman Tower (2660 Connecticut Avenue NW). The tour will end here as well.
Harry Wardman was the most prolific residential developer in the history of Washington, DC. By age 35 the British immigrant was one of Washington’s most respected developers. His work includes 2,500 row houses, 400 apartment buildings, a half-dozen hotels, four car show rooms, three office buildings, an iconic parking garage, and the British Embassy. Wardman’s success lay partially in the fact that he served as both developer and builder, and often as leasing agent, for his projects. He was responsible for more landmark buildings in the nation’s capital than any other developer, and his imprint defines the city’s neighborhoods to this day.
The tour will be led by Sally Berk. She has been a preservation activist in Washington for more than three decades, winning the city’s award for Lifetime Achievement in Preservation. Berk has studied Harry Wardman for decades; she wrote her thesis about his row houses, co-curated the exhibit “A Century of Wardman Row Houses,” and co-authored a chapter about him in Housing Washington: Two Centuries of Tradition and Innovation. She maintains a website showcasing her work on Wardman. Berk has an undergraduate degree in architecture and a graduate degree in historic preservation.
Tickets cost $35 for DCPL members and $45 for non-members.
